OSMANY TORRES

BIOGRAPHY
Osmany Torres was born in Pinar del Río, Cuba. Since childhood he was driven to telling stories visually and when he began studying graphic design at Havana’s Institute of Design (Instituto Superior de Diseño), his life took a turn.

His career in design was influenced by his interaction with the world of advertising, and his relationship with the visual arts.  For nearly a decade, he served as art director for the journal Arte Cubano.  He left Cuba in 2008 to reside in Mexico, where he chose to pursue professional photography.  Five years later, he emigrated to the U.S. where he made of photography his full-time career.

Osmany Torres’ photography is strongly charged with symbolism, as well as great care for elements balancing and framing.  Hie captures the connection between the individual and his/her surrounding, and the contrast that results from such interaction.

Torres is the recipient of two important awards: the National Prize in Design awarded by ONDI (Oficina Nacional de Diseño | Cuba’s National Design Bureau), and the National Curatorial Prize, awarded by CNAP (Consejo Nacional de las Artes Plásticas | Cuba’s National Council for the Visual Arts). In 2006, he received the “Design and Innovation in Spain” fellowship awarded by Spain’s Fundación Carolina and AECI (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional.  Recently he was named Travel Photographer 2018 by TravelPhotographyAwards.net
